Fish is meat so why is it OK during Lent?

While there are many theories about where the acceptance of fish as a “non-meat” originated, most agree that it all boils down to linguistics. In English, “meat” can refer to any flesh, but the Latin specifically refers to mammals and birds only. Another well-accepted argument states that Lenten abstinence originated during a time when land-dwelling animal meat was considered a luxury, while fish was affordable and easily obtained – allowing observers to maintain a spirit of simplicity and humility leading up to the Easter Feast.
